About the Database
  • Experienced researchers will find information on species and collection information using the search parameters provided. The completed search can then be downloaded into an Excel file.

  • Inexperienced researchers may find searches more cumbersome. The taxonomic status of the nearly 30,000 recognized species of fish changes as additional research is completed; it is not our policy to change labels of previously cataloged material.

  • Individuals searching this catalog may need to become familiar with synonyms if a complete search of all our holdings is needed. FishBase is an excellent source of information on fish in general and will list synonyms for each species.

  • In this catalog, hybrids are cataloged under the species name of the parent that comes first alphabetically. For example, Common shiner X creek chub hybrids are listed as Luxilus cornutus X Semotilus atromaculatus. Search Luxilus as the generic name, then cornutus X Semotilus atromaculatus as the specific name.

  • Many county boundaries are streams. The exact location of a collection may straddle county boundaries but may be entered as a single county. If doing a search on counties, a quick scan of holdings in neighboring counties may be useful.
