Illustrations from Morgan's Reports to the Regents of the University
Morgan's 1849 and 1851 reports to the Regents describing the collections he had sent to the State (published, respectively, in the 1850 Third Regents Report and the 1852 Fifth Regents Report) are profusely illustrated. Many of the objects depicted were lost in the 1911 New York State Capitol fire, so these engravings are particularly precious.
A large proportion of the black and white engravings and hand-colored lithographs published in the Third Regents Report were made from watercolored pencil drawings included in the Parker-Reuss Presentation Book. Note that the hand coloring of the plates in the reports to the Regents is not consistent from volume to volume. Neither placement of coloration nor exact hues are consistently reliable. Most, but not all, of the underlying lithographs are correct in details of artifact shape and decoration.
The first group of engravings is from the "Report to the Regents of the University, upon the Articles Furnished the Indian Collection: By L. H. Morgan, December 31, 1849," published in the 1850 Third Regents Report (Third Annual Report of the Regents of the University, on the Condition of the State Cabinet of Natural History, and the Historical and Antiquarian Collection, Annexed Thereto, pp. 65-97 and Pls. 1-17).
The second group of engravings is from Morgan's "Report on the Fabrics, Inventions, Implements and Utensils of the Iroquois, Made to the Regents of the University, Jan. 22, 1851," published in the 1852 Fifth Regents Report (Fifth Annual Report of the Regents of the University, on the Condition of the State Cabinet of Natural History, and the Historical and Antiquarian Collection Annexed Thereto, pp. 67-117, Pls. 1-20).
